ASOIAF: Map Based Team Campaign concluded

 House Baratheon reigns!

What a dramatic end to our third map based ASOIAF campaign!

My team House Tully (aka Starks) were leading the campaign, after my victory over Free Folk and capturing Highgarden from them, with a nice margin after four rounds. Campaign didn't end there, but continued to round five.

Read on to learn how it all ended!




As events for the round five we chose "Destruction", so that nobody could choose it against us and "Choosing my battles" to help Atte (my team mate) fight the Wildlings - one gets to choose the scenario to be played.

In the building & conquest phase those dastardly Wildlings captured The Twins from us (Atte had unfortunately lost to them), dealing a very heavy blow to our score, as it happened to be one of our secret missions to capture and keep it. Too late I also remembered, that we could have announced our secret mission accomplished earlier (and score points from it instantly), but then again, I didn't expect nobody to be crazy enough to spend the points to conquer it!

We then retaliated with "Destruction" event directed at the Wildlings and drama continued: they lost 3 assets and their score dropped quite dramatically too. After B&C we were happy to find ourselves still leading with a narrow margin... then it was time to reveal...

The Secret Missions

One of new things in our campaign was the introduction of Secret Missions. Each player (aka 2 / faction) received a Mission and completing it would yield one extra point of might. One could either declare the mission completed during the campaign (nobody did) or they'd be revealed and checked in the end.

Missions were as follows:

Nightswatch:
  • Warden of the West - conquer Lannisport/Casterly Rock 
  • War on all fronts - fight with 4 different factions during the campaign - SUCCEEDED
Lannisters:
  • Orders to destroy - conquer  2 provinces including Riverrun or it's adjacent provinces - SUCCEEDED
  • First of his name - control King's Landing in the end of the campaign
Free Folk - none completed
  • Time of the new gods is over: conquer Old Town burn down it's Castel
  • Orders to destroy - conquer 2 from the following provinces: 3 Towers, Red Mountains, Sandstone, Greenblood or Sunspear
Targaryen - none completed
  • First of his name - control King's Landing in the end of the campaign
  • Orders to destroy - conquer  2 provinces including Riverrun or it's adjacent provinces
Stark - none completed
  • Warden of the East - conquer Storm's End
  • Forge your Chain - conquer Old Town and build Castel
Baratheon 
  • First of his name -  control King's Landing in the end of the campaign SUCCEEDED
  • Now their Watch has ended - conquer  Castle Black
Stark / Tully - none completed
  • Conquer Twins (we lost it at the last round!)
  • Warden of the North - valloita Winterfell
After all this chaos and mayhem the score looked like this: 


So by completing their secret mission, while neither us Tullys on Free Folk did, Baratheons had sneaked past both us and Free Folk - two factions that had been leading the campaign through it's course!

My journey

  • Here is what happened in my games and links to battle reports I made about my games in this campaign:
    • Round 1. Crushing victory 11-0 from Targaryens




    • Round 2. Crushing victory 17-5 from Starks






    • Round 3. Narrow victory 12- 9 against Baratheons     
    • Rounds 3. & 4. fighting the Wildlings
      • Round 3. Additional team match against Free Folk - Draw (13-12 for FF)
      • Round 4. Crushing victory 12-3 from Free Folk
    • Round 5. Victory 10-5 from Targaryens







My performance as a player ranked first in the campaign. Then again, that meant nothing in the end. We ended second in the campaign, and that's awesome!

Conclusions

  • It happened again! As in our first campaign, the final winner sneaked to victory as former leading factions focused in tearing each other apart 
  • 5 top factions were all within 1,2 might points in the end (Winner 16,5,5th 14,9) - balance of the campaign system proved itself again 
  • Secret missions played a significant role and eventually were a decisive element
  • 4 out of 5 campaign rounds were played with 1.6 units and the final round with 2021 units. 1.7 rules and game modes were used throughout the campaign.
  • This was the largest campaign ever played at our club with 14 players and 5 rounds equaling to 72 games - only couple of them were not actually played - great commitment from the players and umpires
  • Both TTS and physical games were played
  • Campaign was started in March and lasted 3 months, each campaign round taking 2-3 weeks
  • Players seemed quite happy with the campaign and we congratulated Sami and Martin for their victory and passed the privilege of organizing the next campaign... probably in the fall!
