Conquering England - Battle of Hastings 1066

Nopat & Taktiikka Club's Traditional Summer Cabin Trip

It was once again time to enjoy the Finnish summer by heading to the country side with good friends, dozens of beer cans and hundreds of toy soldiers... and to stay crammed in a small cabin for hours and hours drinking the beer and rolling the dice. The companions were:

King Harold (Sebastian) and his brothers (in arms) Juha and Antti
-proudly displaying the new Club T-shirt (and Karhu-beer, in English bear-beer)
...and commanding the defending the Anglo-Saxon fyrds

And the somewhat more crazy AND arrogant Norman lords:
Duke William (aka Kalle) and his vassals my self and Aleksis

What madness would follow from this you wonder... read on to find out! (Sorry about the unsharpness of some of the pictures - lightning conditions were very challenging.

Dux Britanniarum

Last Sunday I had the most pleasant opportunity to try out Dux Britanniarum by Two Fat Lardies.

A new friend - Antti - met at Ropecon gave me and his another friend Heikki a demo of the game: my Vikings were to loot a Saxon village before the Saxon army arrived. DB is actually designed for Arthurian time, but Antti had adapted it for later Dark age... Excellent work!

Fate of Eirik Bloodaxe, end of his Saga aka Battle of Clontarf

Today we fought the historical battle of Clontarf to conclude our club's Britannia Campaign. Campaign was played with Saga ruleset, but this battle was fought with Hail Caesar rules.

3rd Part of Eirik Bloodaxes Saga

SAGA SIEGE!

For our Britannia Saga Campaign's last round I had planned larger team games: SIEGE!
This scenario was designed last year with my campaign wingman Aleksis for the Crescent and Cross campaign. Details on the scenario here

2nd part of Eirik Bloodaxe's Saga

Peasants & monks - who cares?

"Eirik woke up from his drunken slumber into a hangover, pale morning. Last nights feasting must have matched to the eternal feasting in Valhalla... maybe one pint of mead too much Eirik thought. He grunted as a messenger entered his tent. Group of Danish settlers wanted to move to the near town vikings had seized earlier and the captured Irish monks would soon all be dead - and not worth any ransom - if they had to endure a one more night of viking feasting. Eirik cursed the messaanger, peasants and especially monks twice. He really didn't feel like herding  them..."

As part of our Britannia Saga-campaign we played the scenario published in the February Wargames Illustrated Magazine: "Seek Sanctuary". Idea is to get three groups of civilians into safety, without them getting captured by attacking enemies. The game would end when either 8 civilians have been captured by the attackers or reached sanctuary or after 7 rounds, which would mean victory for defenders.

Here be the first part of Eirik Bloodaxe's Saga

Second Game of Campaign Round 3, Stamford Bridge

The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place at the village of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, in England on 25 September 1066, between an English army under King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada and the English king's brother Tostig Godwinson. After a bloody battle, both Hardrada and Tostig along with most of the Norwegians were killed. Although Harold Godwinson repelled the Norwegian invaders, his army was defeated by the Normans at Hastings less than three weeks later. The battle has traditionally been presented as symbolising the end of the Viking Age, although majorScandinavian campaigns in Britain and Ireland occurred in the following decades, such as those of King Sweyn Estrithson of Denmark in 1069–70 and King Magnus Barefoot of Norway in 1098 and 1102–03. Source

This round of our campaign is based on this historical battle. "Battle at the fjord" scenario from the Saga rulebook is well suited for the theme.

Saga Campaign aka adventures of Eirik Bloodaxe.

Saga campaign

We started a long waited Britannia Campaign in November. This was the succession for the Crusades Campaign played last spring.

Unboxing Conquest Games' Medieval Archers

Archers for Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Crusaders...

Visited London last weekend with my daughter and besides doing everything Harry Potter -related I managed to sneak into good ol' Orcs Nest store and found what I was looking for new Medieval Archers from Conquest Games.

After getting back home I couldn't resist for long and had to try and put few of them together and naturally do some kitbashing as well...

Unboxing Blood Rage -kickstarter box

Blood Rage!

I was truly and positively surprised, when UPS delivered a huge box to my door last night: Blood Rage -Kickstarter set! I've been involved in some 5 Kickstarters and this was second of them to be delivered in time. Delivery costs rose to much more than expected - which created quite an upheaval on Kickstarter site, but receiving all this goodiness on schedule kinda makes me forget that...
