A Clash of Kings
At our Nopat & Taktiikka Club our ASOIAF community decided to do a one more campaign using 1.6 units before 2021 version full release. We're actually using 2021 rules and scenarios. Atte and Johannes took the Umpire roles this time. JOhannes being a professional in computer graphics yielded immediate results in form of an improved campaign map!As our community has kept growing, we now had 14 players joining and we decided to form ourselves into faction teams of 2 players each. Read on to learn how does this work!
What's new?
Our basic campaign mechanics remained mainly the same as before, but those faction teams really brought an interesting twist to the games:
- Team is aiming for a team victory and have a one empire with a shared treasury
- Named characters can only appear once on a battlefield per round - this is really good as it leads into players planning their round together and steers away from those optimized tournament lists, for example both Stark players can't have three wolves and 2 3-point NCUs.
- Each player has a secret objective; fulfilling that will yield one extra might point in the total score of a faction. Secret objectives are for example "control a specific area in the end of the campaign"
- You should adapt Events to work with the teams logic
My Faction
In previous campaigns in 2020 I've played Targaryens (ended 3rd.) and Night's Watch (won that one). This time I'm a member of our second faction playing with Starks aka Tully-Faction. My Team mate is Atte, whom has formerly played with Lannisters, but has now come to his senses!
It was more than year since I had played with Starks (basically since I got my Targaryen starter) and boy do they feel "easy" to play with, the deck is soooo good... ok it's broken good! Good, that Starks are balanced in 2021 version of the game.
My Campaign Progress
Round 1. Dance with DragonsI faced my old "arch enemy" Mikko, with whom we started playing ASOIAF in the beginning of 2018. This time Mikko was playing as part of the Targaryens faction, his 4th ASOIAF army so far.
I was naturally afraid of dragons so chose to field an Umber army lead by the bug man himself. Big Jon Umber's cards do auto wounds, which is good against big terrifying monsters!
Can you see Drogon on that single tray?
Double Zerkers do their job!
Mikko played very safe with Drogon, this was his only attack!
Crushing 11-1 victory for Tullys!
Atte also scored a crushing victory in a Stark mirror match against Toni, so we had a really strong first round. We didn't quite lead the campaign after the first round, but it wasn't far! We conquered the Iron Islands, Twins and Neck.
Round 2. Game of Thrones
Another old arch... I mean friend, Pave and another Stark mirror match. I had the pleasure of using TWO commanders simultaneously in my army and went with both Mr. Reed and Robb. We both had quite big hordes...
Stark trickstery from both sides!
Berserkers survive a charge from Berserkers!
My TullySworn Swords face off with Stark SS (and cur them down)
Another Crushing Victory 17-5 for Tullies!
I scored whopping 8 points on the last round!
Unfortunately my team mate Atte suffered a crushing defeat against Free Folk and
we lost Neck to them AND lost our opportunity to conquer areas from Starks!!! We fortified Iron Islands and Twins and conquered Old Town.
To be continued....
